The Sustainable Fusion of Technology & Nature at inLIFE Lodge

inLIFE combined technology with sustainability for the office of the future.

In 2023, MD David Whitehouse made the momentous decision to acquire a property that would provide living space for himself and his family and nearly an acre of land to develop a dedicated sustainable, net-zero, and eco-friendly office space for the inLIFE team.

David felt that their current 1200 sq/ft office unit, which they had rented for the past eight years, was oversized for the team of seven staff members. The office boasted amenities such as a pool table, arcade machines, and gaming consoles, which impressed visitors but did not align with inLIFE’s sustainability goals for the future.

The vision for the new office, dubbed the inLIFE Lodge, was to set a precedent for the office of the future by purpose-building it from the ground up to integrate sustainability with technology seamlessly. Every aspect of the lodge’s design and construction was carefully considered to minimise environmental impact while maximising efficiency and functionality.

From the choice of materials to the implementation of smart technology, sustainability was at the forefront of every decision. The lodge was constructed using repurposed and locally sourced wood, with eco-friendly materials such as recycled insulation and carpeting. Even the signage was made from 100% recycled plastic.

Smart technology plays a crucial role in optimizing energy usage and reducing waste. Motion sensors were installed for lighting and heating controls, ensuring energy was only used when needed. An air source heat pump provided efficient heating, while home automation allowed for remote monitoring and control of various systems.

The lodge’s location also contributed to its sustainability. Situated in Chasetown, the property was surrounded by natural beauty, including woods and Chasewater Country Park. This not only minimised the construction’s environmental impact but also provided opportunities for further eco-friendly initiatives, such as rooftop gardens and off-grid power solutions.

Construction of the inLIFE Lodge began with Stage 1, completed over three months, and the team moved in on February 5, 2024. The purpose-built design, combined with the latest in sustainable technology, ensured that the future office was not only environmentally responsible but also a comfortable and efficient workspace for the inLIFE team.

As of February 2024, Stage 1 of the Eco-Lodge includes features such as recycled carpet, smart-controlled heating and lighting, and locally sourced materials. Stage 2 is currently underway and will include further sustainability measures such as off-grid power and a rooftop wildflower garden.
